  • Of course they wouldn't keep the actual facts, just the basis is more terrifying.
  • Passengers can throw a plane off balance? I suppose there's more reason to making fat people pay more when you consider that too many on one side could make you do barrel rolls the entire flight.
  • Not sure about elsewhere in Canada, but EVERYWHERE is hiring in my city. Population ~1,000,000, every second store has a NOW HIRING sign.

    Displaced workers or structural unemployment.

    Forgot frictional unemployment.
  • Worker displacement happens here like everywhere else. Structural unemployment here would be the more likely culprit.

It's like this. There is a massive influx of work, wages are off the charts in comparison to elsewhere and yet somehow people aren't finding a job. Lazy, self-entitled people not wanting to work for their money... and I can say this confidently because I train every new employee that comes through my door. They don't have a right to complain about a recession and blaming the upper 1% here, the only excuse for a poor quality of life is them either being disabled or being pathetic.

I had one guy from the states who was disgusted with the fact that someone with no experience but a good work ethic could make $18/h to start, 50 hour weeks. He told me his superiors at most of his jobs back home would make 18 if they were lucky, only a couple made more... and thats near average for labourers in my city. If you are hopeless and have no skills, you can still become an apprentice fitter/welder and make 25/h-30/h within a year or two and all you need is a steady hand.

Bottom line: If you live where I do and are having a hard time making a living, the only person you can be unhappy with is in the mirror.

Not that I want to extend this argument, or even want any part of it, but high wages don't mean anything. What kind of taxes do you guys pay? Higher pay and higher taxes means your laborers probably have the same standard of living as US laborers in the end. Just saying.
  • lol @ plane smells, and crocs on a plane would definitely be terrifying, sad about the deaths though.

Xel has a good point though, that kind of thing is something you have to take into consideration when job hunting even within the US. Some areas the wage looks good, but if living expenses are way higher, you might actually be poorer than if you lived in a cheaper area with slightly less pay. Always gotta work those numbers.

With the price of cheese rising, Bamfield says this is far from surprising given it could be seen as "a lucrative business opportunity for small time criminals."

"It's not just grannies saying, I need some cheese I'll just go and steal it. A lot of the theft is for resale and a lot of this cheese will be resold into other markets or to restaurants."

This made me lol, forget little old ladies making money from knitting, black market cheese is where the money's at! XD
  • And here I thought my future was in selling weed.... who woulda thought it'd be cheese bringin it in

WOOHOOOOOOO RUGBY WORLD CUP! Too bad it's France and All Blacks. All Blacks will demolish them.
    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/rugby-world-cup-2011/news/article.cfm?c_id=522&objectid=10761274

Not quite the demolishing everyone expected, but holy damn that was a tense match! X_X From the French walking up to the Haka to those last 3 minutes of grinding, you never really knew what was going to happen next. Shame about the scoreline though, 8-7 doesn't really do the match justice... But ah well, we won and that's all that matters! =D>

PS: Just remembered tomorrow is a public holiday (labour day, not rugby related :P), it's going to be loud tonight... %-(
  • I wouldn't have guessed that cheese would be the most stolen either. I followed the link for the 2 women who stole $600 of gouda and blue cheese though, and I suppose if you're going to commit a crime, that's the way to do it. Employee boxes it up for them, and then they just stroll out with it. And despite being on cam, they're still not caught. These are much smarter criminals than the guys who dress up in costume and hit the banks.
  • Zeal you are dense to insinuate that people choose being destitute over getting a job in a career field that they have experience. In the United States real unemployment is 17%. That does not include those in university.

As far as your quip about the occupy movement, well, both of our countries have a problem with corporations purchasing politicians. I understand you're talking about "Alberta" and such, but high unemployment is not the only issue.

@Xel 5% or 6% taxes I don't recall. Regardless, that is besides the point. The point is they take home 3k a month; in this city, that is more than enough to live off of if you live on your own. If you have a family, then you are old enough to have had a couple years experience (bumping your wage over 20/h) or you have a trade (welding anyone? 28/h is a low wage for a welder). There's a reason I don't comment on other places in the world... because I don't know their standard of living. In MY city, there's no reason for any male over the age of 18 without a disability to be struggling. That's my point, nothing else.

@Chopin My quip about the occupy movement was directed at the particular guy who picked a fight with me. He made it about the money, not about anything else. He practically told me that I'm a sheep because I make good money, to which I replied no you sir are an idiot :)

Again, I don't comment on things I don't understand, but when I'm surrounded by friends who a large portion complain about not being able to find work. They are as able-bodied as I am and as smart as I am, they just don't want to "become a tradesperson" because they think thats a poor persons lifestyle. Derrr, clearing 3k every two weeks will pay for Engineering, Nursing etc... Grow up people! For those who don't fit that bill, I don't insult them because I know there are circumstances I don't know. Not my place to talk. But theres a lot who have no reason to protest.

Edit: The reason this bugs me so much, is because a couple of these people do have families to provide for and they still won't suck it up and take a crap job. Im not doing my dream job, but there are certain realities you have to face...

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/zagat/controversial-restaurant-policies_b_1011011.html

Curious what people think about some of these policies. Several annoy me, followed a link on the one for no substitutions, and definitely think the restaurant was being ridiculous.
    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/dailydish/2011/06/chef-gordon-ramsay-aghast-at-lady-victorias-treatment-at-gjelina.html

Actually MG, in regards to this, it makes me wonder if this is a place that does the same thing as those "traditional" french restaurants, and has everything pre-done in containers and microwavable bags. Maybe the reason they say no substitutions is because they can't make substitutions, and they get overly defensive about it to hide that fact.
  • That or they are pretentious/snobbish cock monglers that know food better than your own taste buds.
  • That would be the really irritating part. How hard is it really, to just leave off an handful of nuts, or a garnish of acidic fruits? Does it just pain their artistic little souls too much? I think people need to remember that while food can be art to an extent, the restaurant industry is a service industry. They're supposed to be catering to their customers. If the experience and the food does not make people happy, then where is the value? Granted, special orders can be difficult, annoying, and cost more, so I feel some pity, but if someone walks in with an allergy, they still have as much right as anyone else to enjoy the dining experience, and at least in my experience, they will generally leave a bigger tip if served well because they know they are more difficult to serve.
  • Speaking of chefs. Where is LoXie? And cunning?

The main one that i take issue with is the hardline No Substitutions policy, and to a lesser extent the Cash Only one. What you raised sounds like a possibility in regards to the link, but if Ramsay is eating there wouldn't he know if it was prepackaged? But overall denying every request, even reasonable ones that wouldn't affect the dish outside of aesthetics is just poor customer service.

The Cash Only one i see as just an unnecessary inconvenience. Seriously, the business stands to lose potential sales just for the sake of a couple dollars (cents?).

Everything else i have no serious issue with, it largely depends on the establishment. The Auto-Gratuity one is definitely controversial, my sister is a waitress so i know people don't always tip which is hard when serving large parties, but if they are not used in moderation they just shouldn't be there as it is very presumptuous and insulting.
  • I don't like the cash only one either, mostly because I am one of the people who just don't ever carry cash. It's not just restaurants either, there's a lot of the smaller shops around my area that don't accept cards, and even a couple of the big movie theaters were years behind the curve on card payments, it seems like by now everyone should take one, even if they have to say, "we need you to buy a minimum of $x.xx in merchandise to still make a profit with the card fee." I have seen that before, and I don't mind it as much as walking into a place and seeing a "No Cards Accepted" sign.

I'd love to hear an alternate opinion from someone in that industry though. :P
  • Cash only sounds like a robbery waiting to happen.

Knowing that the same thing happens when someone loses a set of house keys (like my father), this is rather funny to see it happen on such a scale.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/24/ryanair-flight-aborted-af_n_1028202.html

Question: How does tape make 'alarming noises'? Mostly though i lol'd from the headline and the thought of windows being held in place by tape. It sounds like something Ryanair would do XD
  • No substitutions is understandable to an extent...but to enforce it with no exceptions is ridiculous. Not everyone can eat everything - different people have different allergies. Certain medications can prohibit eating or drinking certain things. Utterly ridiculous. And that story with Ramsey - that place should change their policy or people should stop eating there. It's one thing to ask for something different, but to ask for LESS? Come on now.

As far as cash only, the only way I see that being ok (besides if their cc machine isn't working) is if they have an on-site ATM...it is basically pushing the fees onto the customers rather than the business.

But overall, restaurants can do whatever they want, to be honest. If you don't like it - don't eat there. Tell others about your experience, and they might do the same. If their business declines due to their policies, perhaps they will change them. There are TONS of restaurants so there is no excuse to put up with crap you don't like.
  • Prison keys should be inset with tiny locater beacons :P I can think of a number of scenarios for which this could be useful.

    "oh dear God" category
^a million times this. Possible decompression in the cockpit? Eh, Duck tape fixes everything right? There won't be any problem.

    http://news.yahoo.com/sharia-law-declaration-raises-concerns-libya-174347939.html

"It's shocking and insulting to state, after thousands of Libyans have paid for freedom with their lives, that the priority of the new leadership is to allow men to marry in secret," said Rim, 40, a Libyan feminist who requested anonymity.

Sorry Rim but you're censored. Don't forget to leave your car keys with me and if you want to go outside ask my permission. You will need a male escort for now on. I won't be available I'm getting married tonight, tomorrow night, and you know what Rim... just pencil in all next week as marriages. After that I'll be having lots and lots of sex. I'll be sure to pencil you in so that you receive an equal amount and it is fair.

I'm not entirely surprised, after living in oppression for so long Sharia law provides the same strict societal structure most have lived with all their lives even though at times it conflicts with their ideals. I do wonder why they'll be setting up a banking system that's forbids interest though, I mean without interest what's the point?

I think they agreed on 3.5% interest.

    http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/regions/middle-east/111024/gaddafi-sodomized-video-gaddafi-sodomy

Gaddafi got a buckwheat on tape.
  • You are utterly ignorant if you're comparing Sharia Law with Ghaddafi's laws. Gaddafi did great things for his nation and pushed equality of the sexes against the wishes of his people. It is unfortunate that his greed [which is shaded by the greed of other politicians] came to be exploited and led to his assassination by the UN. He changed Libya for the better, decreasing illiteracy rate from 80%+ to less than 20%, replenished land by building the world's largest man-made river, aspired and did house every Libyan, provided education and health care for all, ended wars in Africa and tried to unite Africa as one country. The "mass grave" that was found was later discovered was "CAMEL BONES" and was a propaganda tactic.

And lets not forget the hit squads he formed that went into other countries to kill anyone who spoke against him. The plain he tried to blow up. This all aside from the many people he silenced in his own country besides stealing all the money. He did do a few things to "modernize" his country. But how he did it was all wrong.

  • edited October 2011

Gaddafi was stunting, hard. He wanted to create a gold dinar for currency and only accept gold for payment in oil. His desire was to unite all of Africa, and he did not behave during UN speeches. The result was inevitable, but I think Obama has made a mistake turning him into a martyr. The video of him being sodomized is way over the top. This man built one of the greatest wonders of the world as Chopin pointed out. The country is now adopting Sharia law. They might not be a threat to our dollar but they will certainly not be a shining example of democracy which has been advertised. It is clearly a jacked up situation but I guess allowing him to do it might have shifted the balance of power, and that was the nail in his coffin.
