I got the explanation from Bean in a PM. He was doing some testing on the captchas.

Would he put that comment in if it was something devious?

Could have prob hidden it if it was doing something bad, or at least not explain it in plain English comments haha

The comment doesn't mean anything. It's pretty obvious what it's doing if you know even basic javascript.

You can't hide anything in an extension... an .xpi or a .crx are basically just zip files that Chrome/Firefox know what to do with.
