My success if you call it that---in the past was mostly because friends watch my back while I am asleep or vice versa. We share inactives for growth, suicidals, good landgrabs when noobs leave themselves wide open, or just plain temperamental attack over innocent SOK. That was one component of my kingdom growth.
Being alone, and minding my own business - might not get me killed, but easy SOM/SOK on inactives were pass around help me conserve my probes for dire needs. Friendship definitely help me become a better player. I have used many different calculators that I could not come up on my own. The live chat gives me advantage of attacking and getting status without wasting my resources. Little hints and tips helps a lot, at least, that was for me.
But really success is how you define it. Surviving the whole game without being Alliance Target is definitely success.
surviving a whole game without being an alliance target is the result of having a kd that's too crappy to be worth targetting, not anything else. i wouldn't call that success.
I think when the game is as small as it is now, it's a large part of who you know. It's definitely possible to finish top 10 being completely unknown to everyone at this point, but finishing rank 1 by yourself is very difficult if you're doing it against players that are likely equally skilled (or close to) with friends behind them.
SK community is like any other community, skill to make friends help you get where you want to go, just like irl! xD
That's a good point Fauss. I never think of it as anything but community. After so many years, if it was just for the game, then the game won't remember me. It is the people that make it fun or frustrating!
I have always just played with friends in the past, or dear enemies.
Friends make your gameplay fun and just in general. Save on probes when SOM is already there.

How would you define success anyway?

I'm not sure what is the number of players in Terra or S2 for that matter nowadays.
is it possible? sure
is it likely? no

watching your enemies cry as your goons slice into their land like a knife into butter is much much sweeter
