  • naw was watching the ultimate fighter finale
  • ewwww fuck mma its shit!
  • mma=more real then boxing ever will be, thats why boxing went to shit. All the would be boxers became mma fighters because it takes more skill.
  • HAHA never heard so much shit in all my life. If there was more skill in MMA please explain why the top boxers are earning over 50mill a fight yet they cant pull more than 500k a fight at the highest lvl in MMA?
  • also can you please name the "would be boxers" that switched please id like to know. Coz i dont know any
  • Cause everyone knows boxing is going downhill. No1 even talks about boxing anymore unless its paci or mayweather. MMA is the sport of the future. And spending 10hrs a day doing 1 skill vs 10hrs a day having to learn all aspects of fighting takes much more time and training. Learning to defend/attack from the ground, and also being able to stand and box just as good as top boxers.

Top boxers dont earn 50m a fight. Guys like the Goldenboy(oscar) do(but had to spend millions on the advertisement and whatnot, becuase they promote the fight. Mayweather only made 25m for his fight with ortiz, and 24m vs Del Hoya.

Its true MMA fighters dont make as much yet, but in the future they will. Remember MMA just became big over the last 5-7years. Boxing has been around for almost 100years. In 15years boxing will be forgotton and MMA will be the biggest sport on the planet. People used to enjoy boxing because it was brutal and a true mans sport. But now its mainly fancy footed slick fighters, no real brawlers that bring excitement to the game.

Brock Lesnar earned $5,300,000(from his fight purse and pvp share) for his last title defence that he lost. So MMA is quickly catching boxing actually. MMA just needs a few more big name guys to pop up, ones like anderson silva that completely dominate the buisness, so that they can start promoting superfights. Imagine GSP and Silva going at it. I assume they would both easily make 10-12m for a fight like that.

Anyways enough rambling on, thats what i see will happen in the future, unless boxing can figure out a way to bring the excitement back into the sport.
  • Lynog notice the small amount of boxers compared to what there used to be, there was always massive amounts of new fresh up and coming boxers, thats not the deal anymore. Now most of them are flocking to MMA because they see how popular it is becoming.
  • Chaoticx, NO offence, and I don't know you, but surely, spending "10hrs a day doing 1 skill vs 10hrs a day having to learn all aspects of fighting" take the same amount of time... 10 hours?? Right??
  • Yes, im just saying that in that 10hrs they have to learn much more then just boxing. They have to learn all aspects of fighting in the same amount of training time
  • 1 skill are you serious? you obviosly have no idea what the hell you are talking about. As far as boxing dying and mayweather pac being the only pull, well i think you need to stop reading mma forums. MMA will NEVER compare to boxing in anyway possible. UFC are hosting events more or less every week now with the same bums fighting the same bums. the heavyweight division in boxing died along time ago but the other divisions are absolutely booming with brilliant boxers. Your idea of most young fighters flocking to mma must just be a dream you had coz it just aint true. Look up some statistics before you post some shit. Oh and brock never made anything close to that.
Overall Top Ten Earning Fighters in 2011
    (data updated to UFC 139)

    1 Tito Ortiz* $1,045,000
    2 Dan Henderson* $ 820,000
    3 Fedor Emelianenko* $ 800,000
    4 Vitor Belfort* $ 620,000
    5 Nick Diaz $ 600,000
    6 Rampage Jackson* $ 575,000
    7 Jon Jones* $ 570,000
    8 Mauricio Rua $ 565,000
    9 Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira* $ 500,000
    10 Junior dos Santos $ 485,000

chump change. an AMATURE boxer can earn that nvm a PRO. and tito being top :-))

it shows how sad MMA really has become, i keep hearing mma boffs telling me its getting so big every year, im still waiting for it to actually happen.
  • So big? its 10x the size boxing is now. Boxing has maybe 1-2 big fights a year now, when either paci or mayweather fight. All the others are just nobodys now.

"According to ESPN the Magazine, UFC heavyweight fighter Brock Lesnar made $5.3 million from fighting in 2010."

"In 2010, Brock Lesnar joined Mike Tyson as the only fighters to ever draw over 1 million pay-per-view buys in a single year. Tyson actually did it three times in 1996."

So obviously brock is bigger then mayweather and paci, since he and tyson alone have drawn of 1m pvp views.

On the surface, this makes boxing look like a far more lucrative sport for potential fighters to get into. By that standard, guys like Lesnar, Georges St. Pierre should be making much more than Lesnar made in 2010. MMA promoters argue that MMA has dozens of fighters that make over $500,000 a year, while there are only a handful of boxers making big money.

So on average MMA fighters make more then boxers. Yes boxers can make 20-30m but how many of them are making that? 4-5? over the last 10years. While MMA fighters making at least 500k a year number in the 40-50's. The average boxer makes less then 100k a year (this is for the guys that do pvp undercards) So boxers that are doing pvp events make less then 100k a year, while most MMA fighters who do pvp events make upwards of 500k a year.
  • Athletes in spectator sports, which includes boxing, earn an average of $104,470 as of 2010, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. While top boxers such as Floyd Mayweather and Bernard Hopkins may earn several million dollars per fight, many professional boxers earn less than six-figure salaries annually -- some much less.

  • i dont know where you are pulling these make believe figures from but they are hilarious! later on today when i have more time i will put this argument to ned. Stop reading mma forums chaotix they are bad for your brain
  • History's Biggest Pay-Per-View Match
A pay-per-view (PPV) record-breaking fight was Oscar De La Hoya vs. Floyd Mayweather, which took place on May 5, 2007. The previous record was 1.99 million sales; Mayweather and De La Hoya drew in over 2 million PPV purchases and generated $120 million in revenue.

What the fighters earn varies according to sport (boxing or Mixed Martial Arts), the participants and the prestige of the event. Generally, the fighters receive a set amount per fight plus a percentage of the PPV earnings; the more sales that are made, the more they earn from their percentage. Mayweather won the 2007 fight, but both fighters took home a nice paycheck; far above their guaranteed earnings. De La Hoya, who was guaranteed around $23 million, took home about twice that much. Mayweather, who was guaranteed at least $10 million, also earned about double that amount.

Boxing vs. Mixed Martial Arts in PPV Sales
Though the popularity of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) continues to rise, it will need to rise quite a bit more to hit boxing's PPV popularity. For example, the biggest PPV buy rate for a MMA fight is at 1 million PPV buys, with estimated earnings of around $5 million. Though $5 million is a nice chunk of change, it's nothing compared to the money a publicized, popular boxing match can draw on PPV. MMA fights tend to draw PPV buy rates more like 375,000; 500,000 or 800,000.

    Industry Standard
Since his 2007 record-breaking fight, Mayweather has continued to make big money with PPV fights. He pulled in 1 million PPV buys in a 2009 match against Juan Manuel Marquez, and 1.4 million buys in a 2010 match against Shane Mosley. Even though the 2007 match pulled in 2 million buys, the industry standard for a "mega fight" still stands at 1 million buys. It doesn't look like that 2 million mark is going to be broken anytime soon, despite rumors that Mayweather and De La Hoya might have a rematch. The highly hyped "star power" fight between Victor Ortiz and Floyd Mayweather got an estimated 1.3 million PPV purchases.

That number puts it up in the top for 2011 records, but doesn't get it close to the all-time 2 million number of 2007, which still stands as the biggest PPV fight of all time.

so your post about only tyson pulling 1million ppv is laughable. 1million views is seen as the norm for a "big fight" in boxing. UFC has only ever pulled 1million ppv ONCE. Ill pull you some stats on how many boxers made over $1mill later on too. TONNES of them. They get payed alot more money and pull in ALOT more viewers. boxing >>> mma. now and forever. thanks
  • dela hoya alone has sols over 1million ppv on 8 occasions. hes also got the record with over 2million ppv when he fought mayweather. Add to that the fact the price of a boxing ppv is usually 2-3x more exspensive than mma event then you can clearly see that UFC is still aloooooong way from being anywhere near as big as boxing nvm the 10x bigger you stated early :-)) :-))

do some homework next time you come in here for an argument chaot B-)
  • The problem with both sports is that THEY'RE BORING!!

Of the two though, boxing is probably the more entertaining.

MMA the guys always end up rolling on the ground, trying to lock in a submission hold. IMHO, That is gay porn with clothes on.

Boxing, the guys always end up throwing 3 punches a piece (If lucky) and then clinching until they have to separated. Slightly less gay than MMA.

MMA would be better if there wasn't as much ground fighting. I know that is kind of the point, but as I stressed, it is boring and a little queer.

Boxing would be better if they didn't clinch so damn much, and actually threw punches. I know Paci and mayweather are the exceptions, but boxing by and large, has become a hugfest.

But if I HAD to sit through one or the other, I'd pick boxing. To add, boxing fans tend to be a little more tolerable to be around, where as MMA fans tend to be egomaniacs with lingering sexuality issues leading to pronounced narcissism and homosexual repression rage.
  • i think mmas main problem is there is that many exciting fighters. Too many grapple type fighters like sandusk said. ends up becoming like a chess game and really boring to watch. imho it has gone really badly stale over the last few years, i did actually enjoy it when it first boomed now its gone down the pan. says it all when michael bisbing headlined this weekends one. i mean the guy is terrible at every aspect of fighting. He actually trains in a gym not far from where i live along with chek kongo and rampage jackson and all i ever hear about is how the young boxers are putting them fast asleep in the ring. (its a boxing and mma gym) run by an ex boxer putting emphasis on helping MMA guys get better at there standup game.
  • Mma will be bigger. Boxing to wwe to mma . History repeats. Humans like what's more brutal. If they had a fight to the death. It would blow everything away.
  • I used to love boxing. If you are very old at all then you know boxing has gone way down hill. Years ago everyone talked and watched boxing. Now with all the corruption and belts you can't even keep track of who is the number one guy. Boxing is not even close to what it once was. Now take MMA. It used to be nothing and is growing exponentially. Has it passed boxing YET?? No. But with boxing sliding quicker than ever and MMA rising so fast it wont take long.

Also consider those who like to watch fighting want to see fighting. They want to see what would happen if two bad ass dudes met in the bar. Who would win. MMA fighters are as close to a real fight as it gets. Any top MMA fighter would destroy a top boxer in a fight. That is also what is stealing fans from boxing. Soon lynog there will be nothing left in boxing. Enjoy it while you can. I personally like both now and will sad to see boxing go (I really think its already pretty much gone).
  • Im no big boxing fan, I like MMA more but imo MMAs current fast growth is due to the current trend of baldy juiced up tapout wearing meat heads thinking they know their MMA because they went to a local cage fight.

Boxing needs another Iron Mike though :(
  • i disagree screamin. i do know what you mean by the way it has slid, the fact there are now 4 recognised belts in every division and the way the no1 guy just doesnt fight the no2 guy anymore. It has changed alot but saying theres guna be nothing left? i dont think so. Regardless of its slide it still continues to break box office records for ppv sales. Its more or less the heavyweight division thats took the biggest hit due to there bring literally no good heavyweights anymore but the lower divisions are filled with exciting talents.right from lightweight to cruiser is literally bursting with tonnes of exciting fighters. As far as an mma fight being as close to a bar fight as you will get wel... you must go to some wierd ass bars. ive never seen anyone attempting to triangle or arm bar someone in a bar. i have however witnessed tonnes of people throwing as many punches as possible to try and KO there opponent in bars.
  • MMA gets more hype than Boxing, where I'm from anyway. You have to reaaally look to catch a boxing match, but every single UFC event is plastered on every pub, bar, club TV in the city. Its a sport that appeals much more to the casual viewer, and lets be serious... watching a guy get a kick to the jaw and get knocked the fuk out, is quite amusing.

My gf raises a good point though. We are often @ pubs when UFC is playing, and everytime we seem to catch them, a solid 90% of the action is them cuddling on the ground. At the beginning I was a die hard MMA fan and told her off, sayin theres nothing queer about the sport. Then we look over, and the 2 guys are going balls deep on eachother. Solid 69 for a solid minute and a bit.

Tatted up, tap-out wearing meatheads are, contrary to popular belief, not cool. They don't get laid cept for the dirtiest of the trash that the rest of society would rather not touch. No idea why people look up to these guys.

i remember when ufc owner dissed hockey and said get over it to all canadians

never watched ufc after that :-p
  • Boxing isn't going anywhere but MMA is more exciting. Just as boxing needs an Iron Mike MMA needs a Bruce Lee. It will eventually get one and when that happens it will take over.
  • UFC had one-Joyce Gracie
  • ^ The Man, and its Royce Gracie :D
  • Sorry I dont watch much UFC but ive seen some of his highlights and seems like he pretty much dominated the first few years or so
  • I am not a fan of watching homosexual wrestling.
  • I enjoyed UFC when I was a kid. The matches were bloody and violent and sometimes someone broke a limb. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock stuff. Now it's dumbed down. But the worst thing of all is that if I see someone with a "TAPOUT" shirt on I instantly know they're a douche bag.
