Kony 2012

edited March 2012 in General
If your facebook looks anything like mine, people are spreading the word about a man named Joseph Kony, leader of some rebel group in Africa. People are rushing to donate to a group called Invisible Children.

A five minute google search shows many reputable sources bashing IC, saying their means are beyond ridiculous. They are listed as a Non-profit organization, meaning their finances are public. People disagree over the numbers, but its estimated between 10-30% of donations actually leave this group. Furthermore, it seems IC supports the Ugandan miitary, and directly funds donations to them.

What does this mean? IC is all about "saving children from becoming child soldiers". Kony's militia is largely child soldiers. IC funds the army that kills Kony's militia.

tl;dr that awkward moment when you donate to a group, and what little of your money actually makes it to Africa goes to killing children

Note: I spent a mere 7-8 minutes on this so some facts may be invalid, but ive yet to see anyone dispute this.

    Rofl.
  • in 2005 Kony was indicted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court at the Hague, but has succeeded in evading capture since.
  • What can we do? we cant do shit. Until governments pursue real causes such as this rather than protect Israel and giving Iran the media coverage it doesnt deserve.
  • Also seems interesting, the military group your donations fund has an extremely high rate of leaving HIV wherever they go. Some go as far as saying they "rape and loot as much as anyone else in Africa".

Allegedly, Kony could have been captured, but when ~50% of the Uganda economy is based on aid dollars, they do wht they can to ensure the aid keeps coming.
  • Thing is, theres a lot of bored middle class ignorant people who are using this Kony issue and talking about 'changing the world' and all that hippy nonsense. I'm all for getting this guy the media coverage to have him a major priority for arrest and punishment yet I disagree with any twat who uses the 'lets begin by saving the world' crap.

Just watched their video on youtube and half of their volunteers are talking about change the world, 'this generation will make a difference'...

This; did you know our media fails to mention that the US is the only country on the security counsel that blocks resolutions in regards to treating Palestinian people on equal footing with the Israelis? The US is the ONLY roadblock on the security counsel in any resolution. Yet they're upset because of Syria.

I digress; yes this is disgusting, but he's on the run. Maybe try to get it declared a "terrorist organization" so they get their assets frozen/fail to receive further donations?

Fully agree with you there Jayr, didnt see the terrorist light, it seems nowadays for anything to change, in terms of international politics, it has to have something to do with terrorism. Even narcotics is no longer a priority fight.

KONY 2012 is a film and campaign by Invisible Children that aims to make Joseph Kony famous, not to celebrate him, but to raise support for his arrest and set a precedent for international justice
  • This video made me cry :(

Good article there. Fact is Kony isn't the only person that should be chased here when 'there is most likely another host of bad guys out there letting him get on with it.' Its just too easy a solution as it seems. The complications are far deeper, and I agree does have echoes of colonialism in it, that we are cultured and civilized therefore we must import our wise wisdom on a nation who is viewed as backwards and cannot stand up by itself (ie it didn’t introduce them to the many Northern Ugandans already doing fantastic work both in their local communities and in the diaspora.).

Yea I even got invited to some event. Thanks for giving me more information though.

Despite written BBB Wise Giving Alliance requests in the past year, this organization either has not responded to Alliance requests for information or has declined to be evaluated in relation to the Alliance’s Standards for Charity Accountability. While participation in the Alliance’s charity review efforts is voluntary, the Alliance believes that failure to participate may demonstrate a lack of commitment to transparency. Without the requested information, the Alliance cannot determine if this charity adheres to the Standards for Charity Accountability. A charity's willing disclosure of information beyond that typically included in its financial statements and government filings is, in the Alliance's view, an expression of openness that strengthens public trust in the charitable sector.
  • I see... I'm @ 22:00 now.... they flat-out say they need to fund their military
  • Its always dodgy when a charity does not disclose financial side of its operations. Especially when money is the main priority for them apart from awareness.
  • I can guarantee most of their donations would cease if people researched a bit better and looked into where the money goes. I have no better solution, but donating to IC is definitely not it.
The army they back is not like the army most people think of, they are exactly like the rebels but are government and aid funded.

Exactly, the fact that this is funding a government operated military that has in a sense lived side by side with Kony, there must be doubts regardless of the legitimacy of IC. We are basically funding an armed military group that has allowed Kony to do what he has done for the last quarter of a century. We are paying an oppressor to oppress a murderer.
  • Joseph Kony is no longer in Uganda, is starving to death, and the LRA is no longer a real threat. This "campaign", however flawed, is about 6 years too late.
  • Extremely flawed. They just want your money so that they can 'donate' 31% of it to fund the Ugandan and Sudanese military, notorious for war crimes and human rights atrocities.

  • God forbid someone shares the light though. Iposted this on facebook and got called in sensitive, an asshole and other words ;) All from stay at home moms that are quick to jump on the newest fad. Its fucked up that something like this has become a fad.

  • Whats your fb Zeal, I'll support your points. It takes 1 minute and you can find tons of problems with IC.

It was a reply to someones status and apparently looking into where her money goes is less important than showing off to her friends how humanitarian it is. People like this make me sick :-p

Unfortunately, these people are the 'future' world leaders. Oh dear. All my friends who are advocating for IC are Politics or philosophy students and many want a career in journalism or politics.
  • Thats ironic, youd think they would look into what they suppport before supporting, not exactly hard to find.

Yup. Btw Zeal, you can tell your friend the next time she watches a documentary on TV about how rebel soldiers and governments in Africa are shooting civilians, you can tell her that 'she funded that gun, look, look at that AK, its got your name on it.'

And whereas if you donate to WWF, you get regularly sent pictures of animals that you donated to, such as Snow Leopards and Pandas.

With InvisibleChildren, you get regularly sent empty bullet casings from when they shot people.

  • LOL wow, IVe never seen that pic. Going to post that on FB.

This reminds me of 9/11; the exact same things happening here are why I considered the possibility of 9/11 being an inside job. Give the people an enemy they feel strongly against(be it hatred, fear, revulsion) and theyll believe/support/do anything you wish.
  • Those three guys are the founders of Invisible Children. lols
